Roxanne Grinstad
Artist statement from Roxanne C. Langland Grinstad. In a way, all my paintings have the same message:
Care for our planet Earth, care for each other. I can spend hours painting a butterfly wing, yet not come close to the glory of Creation. When I was a small child in Spokane, my parents knew I wanted to draw and paint. They gave me art supplies. As I grew older, I would get up while my Mom and brother were still sleeping, and would go outside and sketch the flowers, butterflies and birds in our back yard. My father died when I was nine, then we were poor, and I started baby sitting and pet sitting to make money. At Lewis and Clark on the first day of each quarter, we were given class books, and brown paper to cover them with. I would sketch on each book with a theme such as Tigers and Leopards on one, Birds on another, and Flowers and Butterflies on another. I clearly remember the day I met Dick Grinstad at Lewis and Clark. It was the first day of winter quarter 1966 by the third floor water fountain. We talked for a few minutes before the bell rang for the next class, but I remember "floating down the hall" after the bell rang. I was a year younger than Dick, so we never had a class together. I applied for a job in LCs office and learned how to work the Switch Board and ran errands. Dick and I began going together. When he proposed to me I said yes ! Later he shared with me that he felt called to be a Pastor. So instead of going to Art School, I got my Ed degree and taught grade school for several years. I experienced sudden hearing loss in one ear, which made it difficult to teach children, so I returned to college and got my Masters in Art Education, and started my small business. In 2008, a friend of ours ask me to be the watercolorist for her company, Scandinavian Design Gift Wrap. Since we are in touch with both our Langland and Grinstad cousins in Norway, we have been blessed to travel, visit them while I photographed Nordic flora and fauna. All this has allowed me to donate my artwork to charitable causes. When we married in 1970 we hoped we could change the world. The first Earth day was in 1970. We hope our lives have made a difference. Sincerely, Roxanne Langland Grinstad
